Langiran Launched as Pilot Barangay in Agri Dev’t

The Municipal Agricultural Office (MAO) has begun distributing vegetable seeds to residents of Barangay Langiran last May 16. The MAO is set to work on the seed distribution for one month.

So far, some 330 households have received free seeds of ampalaya, string beans, squash, tomatoes, okra, upo, and sili from the team led by Resident Seed Technician Ricardo dela Masa.

Forty malunggay cuttings were also planted, and a barangay nursery has been put up in order to sustain the local supply of seedlings.

It can be recalled that, in the first week of May, some 200,000 fingerlings were distributed for free to residents of the same barangay, to make Langiran a pilot barangay as well in aquaculture development. The project, it is hoped, will serve as an example of making all inland fisheries in Bayambang productive.

In an earlier pronouncement, Mayor Cezar T. Quiambao explained that in launching Langiran as a pilot agricultural barangay, “Ang goal natin ay bawat household magkaroon ng economic activity through backyard farming and other projects. I think bagay sa Langiran ang itik-growing and, who knows, perhaps even balut production later on.”

“By June 3, we hope na nakatanim na sila sa Langiran (gamit ang mga vegetable seeds na ibinigay natin sa kanila).”

Mayor Quiambao further explained that, “Because Bayambang is an agricultural town, ang ating mga magsasaka ay busy lang kapag panahon ng pagtatanim. Pagkatapos nito, wala na silang ginagawa. Kaya’t between planting and harvesting, dapat mayroong ibang economic activity.”

“This is in line with the bigger goal (Millennium Development Goal) na mabawasan ang kahirapan by 2030. Dapat magmula sa inyo, sa ating lahat, ang initiative upang matupad ang goal na ito ng inyong local government.”

“Pag ang pilot project na ito] ay nagtagumpay, sana gayahin ng ibang barangay ang Langiran,” he said.
