The event started with a parade around town, rousing townsfolk with a pleasant surprise at 6:30 in the morning (see separate story). A program quickly followed at the Municipal Covered Court.
In his speech, Mayor CTQ expressed his gladness at seeing all employees – officers and staff alike – being united toward a common goal. He then reminded everyone what the sportsfest was all about. “As the theme ‘Kayang-Kaya, Basta’t Sama-sama’ states, this is about unity, camaraderie, sportsmanship… Of course, in every competition, there will be winners and there will be losers. But winning is just a bonus,” he said.
He closed his speech by congratulating the winners in advance. Aided by the Sangguniang Bayan members, Mayor CTQ next lighted the torch, signaling that the competitions had officially started.
Among the eight teams in competition, the White Team emerged as the grand champion. Led by team leaders Luisita Danan, Gerry de Vera, Stephanie Caragan, Councilor Martin Terrado, Engr. Eddie Melicorio et al., it romped away with a trophy plus P30,000 in cash prize. The Green Team, led by Councilor Philip Dumalanta, Rolando Gloria, Joel Camacho, Gene Benebe, et al., was first runner up, receiving a trophy plus P20,000 in cash prize. The second runner up was the Yellow Team, led by Nora Zafra, Erlinda Alvarez, Catalino Perez, SFO2 Raymond Palisoc, et al. The team received a trophy plus P10,000 in cash prize.
Dressed like angels who made an apparition inside the Municipal Covered Court, and moving the crowd and the distinguished panel of judges with their energetic street-dance performance, the White Team also ran away with the grand prize in cheer-dancing. The Yellow Team got the second prize, while the Green Team landed the third prize in this category.
The Blue Team, which was composed of stellar members like the Vice-Mayor himself, Raul Sabangan, and no less than the Bayambang PNP Chief Cirilo Acosta, grabbed the first place in basketball, followed by the Yellow Team.
The Green Team snagged the coveted first place in volleyball, followed by the Pink Team.
The White Team was also first place in badminton.
The Green Team led in table tennis (men), while the White Team won in table tennis (women).
Chess was ruled by the White Team (men) and Green Team (women).
The White Team won in Amazing Race.
Miss LGU Barako 2016
The night after the various competitions, which were held at the Municipal Covered Court, Municipal Plaza, Bayambang National High School Gym and Pangasinan State University Gym, Miss LGU Barako 2016 was held. Ten straight men bested one another in pretending to be beauty queens for one night, keeping the audience inside the Covered Court riveted to their seats with laughter and excitement.
Jonathan Liwanag of Violet Team was declared by the panel of judges – which included Mayor CTQ and Mayora Niña Jose – as Miss LGU Brusko 2016. On his head rested the crown worn by Ms. LGU Brusko 2015, Dennis Malicdem. Liwanag, who charmed the judges and audience with a surprising twist at the end of his ‘Sister Act’ presentation, received a cash prize of P15,000. First-runner up was Eduardo Sison, who serenaded the jampacked crowd with an entrancing rendition of a song number in his well-known RnB vocals accompanied by a guitar he himself played. Jonathan Papio of Blue Team was second runner-up.
LGU Month celebration
This event was organized by the Sports Committee, headed by Municipal Administrator Atty. Raj Sagarino and composed of selected officers and staff from the different departments. It was also held in celebration of October being the LGU Month and as the LGU’s way of marking the 25th anniversary of the passage of the Local Government Code.
The Sportsfest is also just a prelude to the inter-barangay sports competition to be held this month of November.
