TNHS Takes Home Binasuan Dance Title

The Tanolong National High School Binasuan Dance Team emerged as the grand champion, beating five other teams, in the “Palyagan na Binasuan ed Sayawan tan Drama” (Binasuan Dance-Drama Contest) held at the Public Auditorium last March 30.

It was dubbed “Dance-Drama” because each team had to adapt the local folk dance around a certain theme of its choice.

The activity was participated in by six schools of the town, namely (apart from Tanolong National High School) A.P. Guevarra Integrated School, Bayambang District II, St. Vincent Catholic School, Bayambang National High School and Bayambang District I.

Saint Vincent Catholic School came in second, followed by the Bayambang District I for the third place.

The champions ran away with P30,000, while the first runner-up were handed P20,000 and the second runner-up P20,000. The non-winners received a consolation prize of P5,000 each.

In his speech, Mayor Cezar T. Quiambao thanked the members of the Bayambang Municipal Council of Culture and the Arts (BMCCA) for spearheading such event and commended them for their efforts in reviving the cultural life of the town.

The binasuan is a Filipino folk dance in which the performer holds full wine glasses in each hand and balances another glass on the head while dancing. As the dance progresses, the difficulty level of the balancing act increases, in the process taking the audience’s breath away. Binasuan originated in Bayambang and is popular at festive events such as weddings.

Quiambao also encouraged the town’s councilors to propose or draft a resolution to make the binasuan dance a part of the educational curriculum of Bayambang.

“This is the identity of our culture, let us not forget it; instead we should enrich it, we should preserve and promote it,” the local chief executive added. (Bayambang PIO/Media Affairs Office)
