Mayor Cezar T. Quiambao, assisted by the municipal Department of Agriculture (DA) officers and staff, supervised the turnover of 200,000 fingerlings to the people of Barangay Langiran on May 4, 2017.
According to DA OIC Artemio Buezon, the fingerlings – taken from the stocks of Central Luzon State University, Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija – were given by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources after an earlier request was made by the LGU.
The haul comprised of 20,000 red tilapia, 20,000 red gourami, 20,000 carp, and 140,000 tilapia fingerlings.
Langiran Punong Barangay Gerald Carungay welcomed the delegation from the Municipal Hall in behalf of the resident farmers and fisherfolk, who lost no time in releasing the donated fingerlings to the existing pond.
Mayor Quiambao instructed the beneficiaries to take care of the fingerlings for four months and see to it that a sizeable aquaculture activity will be sustained in Langiran, so it will become a pilot barangay in aquaculture.
He hopes this will jumpstart the rehabilitation of Langiran Creek and turn the seeding program into not just a full-blown aquaculture industry but also a tourist attraction, complete with floating fish cages and maybe even floating restaurants in the future.
